Grandmomma's Kitchen at Il Terrazzo

*This establishment is now CLOSED.*

Had dinner at the newly opened restaurant Grandmomma's Kitchen a little more than a week ago. Grandmomma's Kitchen serves American style comfort food.

Grandmomma's Kitchen at Il Terrazzo
It was inspired by the owner's trips to the US and so it basically offers a selection of food she loves to eat. I quite like the bright and neat interiors.

Rootbeer Float at Grandmomma's Kitchen Il Terrazzo
I started off the evening with an order of Rootbeer Float (P95, pictured above). It actually came with a solid scoop of ice cream on top but I got caught up chatting with my dining companions and so I snapped the photo a little too late so it was melted already... lol.

Breakfast Pizza at Grandmomma's Kitchen Il Terrazzo
Upon the owner's recommendation we tried Breakfast Pizza, which wasn't in the menu yet at the time. The thin crust freshly baked pizza was loaded with bacon, fresh spinach, and a couple of eggs fried sunny side up. I was so surprised that the eggs didn't run when I grabbed a slice. This is soooo good. I love that all the toppings are good and healthy... except maybe for the bacon, haha but at least it's all natural! I would gladly go back to Grandmomma's Kitchen and have some more of this.

Smoked Baby Back Ribs at Grandmomma's Kitchen Il Terrazzo
For my main course I ordered Smoked Baby Back Ribs (P255, pictured above). I liked the hickory smoked flavor and it was a pretty big serving. Unfortunately the ribs were overcooked so they weren't fall-off-the-bone tender as I would've wanted them to be. The vegetables (carrots, string beans, and mushrooms) were surprisingly yummy though -- sweet and crisp!

Avida Land Asilo Tagaytay... your home away from home!

They say that home is where the heart is. If that were true, home would be in cool and mountainous Tagaytay. I've always loved how it gets chilly at night there even without air-conditioning. Nothing beats walking around the verdant landscape of Tagaytay with the sun shining down on you while a refreshing breeze blows.

Avida Land Asilo Tagaytay
One of the reasons why we don't go to Tagaytay as often as we'd like to is the drive. It takes at least a couple of hours to get there from Manila then we stay for a while only to go back before it gets too late. During those times, you'd get to thinking that wouldn't it be great to have somewhere to stay so you don't have to rush off all the time? That is where Avida Land Asilo Tagaytay comes in.

Avida Land Asilo Tagaytay
Located 5 minutes away from the Tagaytay Rotonda, it's close to numerous restaurants, places of worship, and various leisure spots. The name Asilo actually stems from the Tagalog word "silong" which means to take shelter.

Avida Land Asilo Tagaytay
I had a chance to visit the actual site where Asilo Tagaytay will soon stand.

Avida Land Asilo Tagaytay
I also checked out the model units at the Avida Land showroom. Unfurnished, a studio unit (22-30 sqm) would look something like this.

BYS Complete Cosmetics Australia now in the Philippines!

I got an invitation to check out BYS Complete Cosmetics a few weeks ago. BYS, an Australian brand which stands for "Be Yourself", offers a complete line of affordable make-up products which allows women to cover the basics and yet keep up with the latest trends without spending too much.

BYS Complete Cosmetics Philippines
Sounds good, don't you agree?

BYS Complete Cosmetics Philippines
Anyhow, I dropped by the BYS Spring Summer Forecast event at Seda Hotel and got a good idea of what's in store. We were each provided with a traincase to play with!

BYS Complete Cosmetics Philippines
So many eyeshadow palettes to choose from, I couldn't decide which one to try or swatch first!

BYS Complete Cosmetics Philippines
Lipsticks, glosses, bronzers, brushes... the traincase has every single cosmetic item you can imagine.

Wilkins Moms Know Best

When my son was about 6 years old (he's 12 now), he had some halo-halo which our office staff bought from a nearby store. At the time my daughter was just a toddler so she wasn't really old enough to eat halo-halo yet. When we got home, he complained of a tummy ache and ended up going to the bathroom a lot. We consulted our pediatrician and after some tests we found out he had amoebiasis.

I immediately suspected the crushed ice used in the halo-halo was made from unclean water. There was no other variation in my son's daily routine except for that halo-halo. He had to take medication for a week and miss a few days of school because of what happened. After that experience, I was determined to make sure it never happened again.

Wilkins Distilled Drinking Water
Wilkins Distilled Drinking Water
As a mom, I always want what's best for my kids. I'm very discerning when it comes to what I buy for them be it clothes, toiletries, and school supplies... so what more consumable items like food and water? The well-being of my children is always top priority. That said, of course I want only the safest drinking water for them... and that, as I've discovered over the years, is Wilkins Distilled Drinking Water. It comes highly recommend by our pediatrician to boot. I trust her and I know that we both share the same sentiment when it comes to our children's health: There can be no compromise. I'm well aware that Wilkins costs a bit more compared to other distilled water brands but I don't think we can put a price tag on the health and safety of our children.

Wilkins Moms Know Best

Tamayaki Philippines in San Juan City

Just when we thought we already had enough milk tea places in San Juan, another one pops up. This time, it's a franchise from China... and it doesn't just offer milk tea but the popular Japanese snack takoyaki (octopus balls) as well.

Tamayaki in San Juan City
Hubby and I tried it out last night. We were impressed by the place -- the bright lights, the modern interiors, and the impressive looking counter where you place your order. It was spacious and it had great air-conditioning too.

Tamayaki in San Juan City
There are a lot of tables and chairs so you can actually hang out and chill after you place your orders.

Tamayaki in San Juan City
Anyhow you line up at the counter and place your order. You are then given a small plastic chip with a number. You wait for your number to be called then you go pick up your order from the counter.

Takoyaki at Tamayaki in San Juan City
Here's where it goes bad. It took almost an hour for our order to arrive. Hubby and I just ordered takoyaki and two drinks. The super cute packaging did little to make me feel better about waiting for so long.

Can your Facebook cover get your page deleted?

Sadly, the answer to that question is YES! Last night, while chatting over a mix of Chinese food, ice cream, takoyaki, and milk tea (I don't remember the exact time frame but it happened while we were consuming any of the aforementioned food items...), my friend Richard told me that having my blog's web address or url on my Facebook cover page can get my page suspended or deleted for violation of Facebook's terms. He then proceeded to tell me that he knew of a popular Facebook Fan Page with over 100k fans that vanished off the face of the social networking site just like that.

Facebook Pages Terms
I couldn't believe my ears but I wasn't taking any chances. When I got to my computer, I immediately dug up the Facebook Pages Terms at It was revised last December 2012 and true enough, there was a whole section on Facebook cover pages which I highlighted in the screencap above (you can click on the image for a closer look).

Here's a copy-paste version of that section:

B. Cover

All covers are public. This means that anyone who visits your Page will be able to see your cover. Covers can't be deceptive, misleading, or infringe on anyone else's copyright. You may not encourage people to upload your cover to their personal timelines.

Covers may not include:

  1. images with more than 20% text;
  2. price or purchase information, such as "40% off" or "Download it on";
  3. contact information such as a website address, email, mailing address, or information that should go in your Page's "About" section;
  4. references to Facebook features or actions, such as "Like" or "Share" or an arrow pointing from the cover photo to any of these features; or
  5. calls to action, such as "Get it now" or "Tell your friends."

Animetric's World Cover Page Modified
So yeah, I was guilty of having my url on my blog's Facebook Fan Page cover so I changed it last night. I've worked very hard to get my page to where it is and I don't want it wake up one day only to find it gone.

Do you have a Facebook Fan Page? Just like the law, ignorance of the modified Facebook Pages Terms is not an excuse for the possible consequences so please do read through them at and make any necessary changes to avoid potential problems.

Manang's Chicken at Tomas Morato, Quezon City

One weekday lunch, hubby and I decided to try Manang's Chicken. We were closest to the Tomas Morato branch at the time and so that was where we ended up.

Manang's Chip and Dip at Manang's Chicken
We tried Manang's Chips and Dip (P64 for large size, pictured above) which we found intriguing. The large size comes with two dips (there are three available: Creamy Cheese, Garlic Mayo, and Spicy Ketchup). Since hubby and I each had one full order we ended up with four dips so we were able to try all of them. We both enjoyed the chips -- lightly salted real potatoes sliced thinly then fried to a crisp. They are best eaten hot as that's when they are at their crunchiest.

Chicken Meal at Manang's Chicken
We were supposed to try the Garlic Pork Chop that day, unfortunately it was out of stock so we settled for chicken. A 1-pc chicken meal like this at Manang's costs only P99. It comes with a drink too. I liked how crunchy and tasty the sweet-savory sauce-drizzled chicken was but the meat was a bit dry.

We got Coleslaw (P29, pictured above) and Buttered Corn (P29, pictured above) as our side dishes. The coleslaw tastes like KFC's, so yeah, it's good.

Georgina Wilson for Magnum's new flavors!

Magnum unveiled two new flavors and a new brand ambassador earlier today at URBN Bar and Kitchen. I honestly had no idea what was in store when I got there.

Magnum Ice Cream Launch
The place was laden with chocolate!

Magnum Ice Cream Launch
We were ushered to our tables were hors d'oeuvres were waiting for us.

Magnum Ice Cream Launch
There were chocolate covered strawberries

Sappe Beauti Drink now in the Philippines!

Some time back I got some sample bottles of a truly unique beverage from Thailand -- Sappe Beauti Drink. Being the vain person that I am, I was immediately intrigued upon hearing the name.

Sappe Beauti Drink Philippines
When I agreed to sample Beauti Drink, I really had no idea what it was. I googled a bit and found out that it's a popular bottled drink in Thailand that's available virtually everywhere.

Sappe Beauti Drink Philippines
Anyhow, there are two variants: Sappe Beauti Drink L-Carnitine (above left) and Sappe Beauti Drink Collagen (above right).

Sappe Beauti Drink Philippines
Sappe Beauti Drink L-Carnitine is a citrusy drink that's made with white grape and lime juices. It contains 8000mg of fiber and 86mg of L-Carnitine which helps you burn fat. I'd describe the taste as something like a non-carbonated Sprite or 7-Up.

Cafe 1771 at El Pueblo in Ortigas Center

Had a leisurely breakfast at Cafe 1771 with my friends and fellow bloggers Frannywanny during her last weekend here in Manila (she recently moved to Singapore) and Roch. We were invited by Cafe 1771 to sample their breakfast items.

Cafe 1771 El Pueblo Ortigas
I started my morning with a piping hot cup of Cappuccino. Forgot to check the price.

Cafe 1771 El Pueblo Ortigas
I really like Cafe 1771's interiors -- spacious tables and couch-like chairs... tall windows... bookshelves... I find it very cozy. It somehow gives me the feeling of being at a friend's house instead of a restaurant.

Cafe 1771 El Pueblo Ortigas
Since there were six of us in the group we could try a wide variety of stuff to eat since we had everything for sharing. We started with Beef Tapa (P350, pictured above). Tasty and tender pieces of lean beef, sinangag (garlic rice), atchara, and scrambled eggs with diced tomatoes and onions make this a hearty and filling breakfast. Delicious! It's also served with your choice of beverage: mini fresh fruit juice of the day, hot tea, hot chocolate, or brewed coffee. Do you prefer garlic brown rice? Just add P40.

IHOP Philippines at Fort Bonifacio Global City!

Whenever we go to the US, a visit to IHOP Restaurant is mandatory because it's our kids' favorite restaurant. Imagine their excitement when I told them that IHOP has finally made it to the Philippines. That said, I immediately confirmed my attendance when I was invited to the IHOP media event.

IHOP at Fort Bonifacio Global City
It was a full house. Everyone wanted first dibs on IHOP. Magazines, newspapers, TV stations, blogs... who could blame them? Even I chose to be there, declining all other events for that day. Just in case you're wondering, IHOP's first Philippine store is in Fort Bonifacio Global City.

Spinach and Mushroom Omelette at IHOP Fort Bonifacio Global City
There was already a preset line-up of food for us to try which included Spinach and Mushroom Omelette (P265, pictured above). Wow. I was blown away by the combination of fresh spinach, mushrooms, onions, and loads of melted swiss cheese. It's topped by rich hollandaise sauce and diced tomatoes too. It's soooo good. I thought it was quite reasonably priced too as it's good for sharing.

Splashberry IHOP Splasher at IHOP Fort Bonifacio Global City
When I was asked to choose a drink, I decided to try an IHOP Splasher. I got it in Splashberry (P175, pictured above) which is a blend of strawberries, lemon-lime soda, and orange juice.

Why I don't like going out on Valentine's Day...

No doubt about it... Valentine's Day is one of the most celebrated occasions here in the Philippines. Filipinos are after all romantic by nature and everything love-related sells like hotcakes.

Big Family Extra Feast thin crust heart-shaped pizza from Angel's Pizza I've never really been the sentimental type and I'm the kind of person who's emotionally low maintenance. I don't require that we go out every occasion and I don't get pissed off about forgotten birthdays and anniversaries (most probably I'd forget sooner than you would anyway). It's just the way I am. Perhaps it can be partially attributed to the fact that my parents split up early on and I was pretty much left to my own devices when I was 10 years old.

When hubby and I were not yet married we actually did go out on V Day a couple of times. I seem to recall having a steak dinner at Melo's which we both thought was just so-so at best considering the price paid.

Animetric on Twitter
Anyhow, going back to the topic... yes, I love trying out new restaurants and dining out but please don't make me do so on Valentine's Day. Here are the reasons why:
  1. Traffic is horrendous. On V Day, everyone seems to want to go to the same places at the same time.
  2. You have limited food choices because everything is presented either as a set menu or a V Day special.
  3. Service is affected because of the sheer number of diners that evening. It doesn't help that establishments tend to overbook so your favorite restaurant is more crowded than usual. I don't see how squeezing in so many couples in one place is romantic in any way.
  4. Prices are high because everything is "made more special".
  5. I hate flowers and it's just flower-infested everywhere on V Day.
So yeah, come V Day, all I want to do is stay home and chill. When I was about to give birth to my son back in February 2001 I told my doctor that I wanted to schedule my C-section any day except V Day because I didn't want my son to have a hard time celebrating his birthday in the future.

When it all boils down to what really matters, you don't need to assign any specific day to show people that you love them.

Advanced Happy Valentine's Day!

P.F. Chang's at Fort Bonifacio Global City

Last January 24, I attended the media preview for P.F. Chang's at The Fort. I missed the one in Alabang Town Center several months ago because it was too far away from me so I made sure I didn't miss this one.

P.F. Chang Fort Bonifacio Global City
P.F. Chang's is an American-Chinese chain. Although I've been to the US many times in the past I've never tried eating at P.F. Chang's. At the Bonifacio High Street branch, I was welcomed by two gigantic horse statues at the entrance. They are so tall that they reminded me of the Trojan horse in Troy.

P.F. Chang Fort Bonifacio Global City
When asked to choose a drink, I ordered a Honey Dew Cucumber Smoothie (P110, pictured above). It was very refreshing and not overly sweet, I think I finished it less than halfway through the slew of dishes that were served.

P.F. Chang's Fort Bonifacio Global City
A wave of appetizers made it to our table, starting with Chang's Chicken Lettuce Wraps (P285, pictured above). This is a normal sight at Chinese lauriat parties but it's usually duck instead of chicken. I never really liked the lauriat version because I've always found it to be too salty or MSG-ridden. P.F. Chang's is surprisingly delicious. Tasty but not overpoweringly so. I highly recommend this appetizer if it's your furst time to dine here.
