Buon Giorno Caffe and Bistro at Rockwell Business Center

I had a splendid dinner at Buon Giorno Caffe and Bistro with fellow bloggers last March 24, 2011. Yes, the same Buon Giorno in Tagaytay. I didn't even know there was a Rockwell Business Center in the middle of Ortigas, hehe. I love Rockwell in Makati and all that's missing in Rockwell Ortigas is a mall. I wish they'd build one too, haha.

Buon Giorno Rockwell Business CenterAs soon as I sat down, the server approached me and asked what I wanted to drink. I told her to recommend something and she suggested the Strawberry Lemonade Smoothie (P181, pictured above). I was expecting it to be creamy but it tasted just like fresh lemonade with a hint of strawberry.

Buon Giorno Rockwell Business Center

Complimentary bread baskets were placed on the tables.

Buon Giorno Rockwell Business CenterWe were all served different kinds of soups. I got the Ci Crema de Broccoli (P140, pictured above) or Cream of Broccoli. It was topped with croutons too. Now if only I could always have Broccoli in such a delicious way. :)

Fight Osteoporosis and win Anlene gift packs!

If there's one thing I love, it's milk. I've been drinking and drinking for as long as I can remember. In fact, the first thing I drank when I arrived at my mom's house in Los Angeles about four hours ago was fresh milk. :p

Anlene against Osteoporosis...and it has actually paid off. Every time I get a bone scan, I'm diagnosed as having low risk for Osteoporosis. The thing is, I actually can't afford to drink fresh milk anymore because it's making me fat. It's an indulgence now that I'm in my late 30s. Sad fact of life is my metabolism isn't what it used to be.

Anlene Gold and Anlene RegularGood thing there's Anlene. It's low in fat so I can get my milk fix, take in a good dose of calcium, and gain none of the additional weight. Anlene powder comes in chocolate and vanilla flavors, especially formulated for women aged 19-50. If you're over 50, Anlene Gold is for you. :)

Chocolate-flavored AnleneI always transfer the powder to an airtight container. I drink it as is or add it onto coffee in place of creamer and sweeteners. I got the idea from Senator Pia Cayetano, hehe... and I prefer the chocolate flavored Anlene. I know so many elderly people who have such a hard time moving around because their bones have gotten brittle over the years. It doesn't have to be that way. Let's fight Osteoporosis, shall we?

Good news, I'm giving five (5) readers four (4) boxes of Anlene each (like in the photo above). :D

Just answer this simple question: "How do you fight Osteoporosis?"

Three ways of posting your answer:

To tag, type in the “@” symbol then follow it with the word “Animetric” This will prompt a drop-down menu box which will present you “Animetric's World”. Click that and you should see “Animetric's World” become a blue link. After completing the sentence, click the Share. Make sure your profile is set to everyone or else your entry won't appear on my FB page.

  • Tweet your entry on Twitter. (1 entry)

Twitter entries must use this format: @animetric I fight Osteoporosis by drinking Anlene! (sample entry)
Each person can get a maximum of three (3) entries. Winners will be drawn via random.org when I get back to Manila... which should be around Holy Week. Open nationwide to residents of the Philippines, I'm shipping off prizes to you! :D

Maybelline Long Extreme Stiletto Mascara

I got a chance to give the Maybelline Long Extreme Stiletto Mascara a trial run during the Maybelline Stiletto Run at Robinsons Place Manila last March 15, 2011.

Maybelline Long Extreme Stiletto Mascara

I like the sleek red and black packaging. It's like a magic wand. :D

Maybelline Long Extreme Stiletto Mascara

There's this cardboard ruler for you to measure your eyelashes with.

Maybelline Long Extreme Stiletto MascaraIt was kind of tricky for the promo girl to aim the ruler correctly, I was getting teary-eyed. After I snapped a photo, she applied the mascara on my lashes.

Beach Hut Max SPF 100++??

It's no secret that I'm the ultimate sun protection addict. I never go out without slathering on sunscreen on all exposed body parts. I'm the girl who brings long sleeves to Boracay so I don't burn. :p

Beach Hut Sun BlockImaging how ecstatic I was when I found these Beach Hut sun protection products waiting for me at home. Beach Hut Max 100++ SPF??? It even comes with a matching Beach Hut Hypoallergenic Face Sunblock with SPF 65. I'm in sunblock heaven, baby!

I'm leaving for Los Angeles less than 48 hours from now. You can be sure I'm toting these along for the ride as we go theme park-hopping with the kids in sunny California.

Of course, I will let you know how it goes. Product reviews coming soon... :D

Golla Mini Sleeve + Gimme Golla Contest!

Got this Golla Mini Sleeve a while back. It's black and it fits notebooks and netbooks up to 10.2 inches in diameter. It retails for P1,390 if I'm not mistaken.

Golla Mini Sleeve

It looks like a small suitcase don't you think?

Golla Mini SleeveOpen it up and tadaah! It's a straightforward laptop case. Lightly padded, mesh pockets, velcro strap...

Golla Mini SleeveI found the detachable strap pretty cool. You can adjust where and how you want it by attaching it to the velcro pad on the bag itself.

Groupon Philippines responds to my experience

A few days ago, I blogged about my Beeconomic / Groupon Philippines online deal-shopping experience. It wasn't a rave review.

Groupon Philippines Burger Avenue dealI got an email from Groupon Philippines president Lori Villafuerte shortly after. Since some of you were asking about their response to my experience, I've decided to share Lori's email here:

Hi Rowena

Thanks for this! I appreciate comments like this as it will help us improve on a daily basis. Customer service is our priority and I personally hate it if I don't get the proper service. I am sharing your comments to our team as well as burger avenue. Our merchants are well aware of the Groupons and we even train their staff before deal launches. I guess there was some lost in translation along the way in making sure that the groupons were redeemed properly.

I apologize that you kept getting that error . Not good! Anyway, just to give you a heads up that we are migrating to Groupon.com.ph very soon. So no more of these issues hopefully.

I'm going to see if I can get you that Epilsmooth kit from merchant since you missed it.

I'll let you know. please continue to blog about us.. Good , bad or any violent reactions :) it will only make us better!

LV

I like her positive attitude. I hope things get better from here on... and I hope I can still get the Epilsmooth kit that I missed due to technical problems. :)

What do you think?

Passion Restaurant at Resorts World Manila

One Saturday afternoon, my friends and I decided to have lunch at Passion Restaurant in Resorts World Manila. We were famished because we had just gotten off a Cebu Pacific flight from Hong Kong. If you've been on a Cebu Pacific flight before, you'd know that they don't really serve food. All they have are junk food, instant noodles, and breads priced at P50 - P100 each. Resorts World Manila was close to the NAIA 3 so that was where we ended up.

Passion Restaurant Resorts World ManilaSince there were ten of us, we decided to get a function room. It comes with its own LCD TV, speakers, and rest room too. Theoretically you can have a karaoke session here, but the servers told us the system wasn't quite ready.

Passion Restaurant Resorts World ManilaWe were served pickled vegetables as appetizers while we browsed through the menu. I was amused by the rectangular plate containing three different condiments: chili sauce, minced chili peppers, and XO sauce. We finally decided to order the set menu for six (6) people. We just ordered about three other dishes so it would be enough for all of us... and it was. :)

For P4,888++ we were getting:

  • Barbecued Pork with Honey Sauce
  • Szechuan Sauce Chicken
  • Shark's Fin Soup with Shredded Abalone and Dried Seafood
  • Stir Fried Shrimp "Kung Po" Style
  • Steamed Live Garoupa
  • Stir Fried Sweet and Sour Pork with Fresh Fruits
  • Wok Fried Minced Bacon with Garlic and Broccoli
  • Scallop Fried Rice
  • Hot Red Bean Cream with Glutinous Dumpling
Passion Restaurant Resorts World ManilaBarbecued Pork with Honey Sauce is the smallest dish in the set. It's served in soy-based sauce. The meat is kind of fatty although it's not really fat... wait, did that make sense? Let's just say it's meat but it's like fat.

Passion Restaurant Resorts World Manila
Szechuan Sauce Chicken was pretty exotic. When you say szechuan, I expect something reddish and spicy, perhaps with some cashew nuts. Instead we got what seemed like steamed white chicken served with sesame-based sauce, lots of century egg wedges, chopped peanuts, and minced green onions with parsley. Nice, but I'm not fond of chicken. :p

Groupon Philippines Experience

Once there was a deal site. It was located in the Philippines. Its name was Beeconomic. It was one of many sites online which offered deals on just about everything -- food, fashion, gadgets, beauty, travel... Beeconomic went up here - http://www.beeconomic.com/philippines/Default.aspx. I registered for an account because I'm quite addicted to online deal shopping.

Groupon Philippines reviewNot long after, Groupon, the US-based company which started the deal fever, bought Beeconomic. Beeconomic officially became Groupon Philippines.

Groupon Philippines new siteGroupon Philippines put up a new site, it was to be the official one. You can access it at http://www.beeconomic.com.ph. They also had a lovely launch event at Robot Restaurant which I attended. I got a Groupon Philippines GC as a token. Being the deal addict that I am, I was very excited to try it out.

For some reason, the credits on my GC was loaded onto the old Beeconomic site. The problem was, it was no longer well-populated by members because everyone was migrating to the new site. Hence, when I tried to buy a deal using my credits, the deal would not activate whereas the same deal would turn on quickly at the new site. I emailed Beeconomic's support group for help. I got an answer after a day, I was quite impressed too as Groupon Philippines President herself Lori Villafuerte got in touch with me. She told me that she would help me buy the deal from the old site and then transfer my remaining credits to the new site. I was quite happy with the response.

Groupon Philippines reviewAnd so I tried to purchase deals on the new site. The problem was, every time I would click on "Buy Now" I would get this error screen. I thought at first that maybe the site was overloaded or something. I tried clicking "Buy Now" on a daily basis. After a week of that, I was still getting this error screen. There was this hair removal kit I really wanted to buy so I emailed support again. This time, another person answered, after more than a day. The deal was over by the time I got her response. She told me that I tried buying at a bad time when everyone else was also buying so my purchase couldn't go through. Then she said sorry but I missed the deal already.

Holiday Inn Express Hotel Hong Kong Review

Hubby and I took a leisure trip to Hong Kong with our high school friends last March 16-19, 2011. We stayed at Holiday Inn Express in Causeway Bay which is located right across Times Square Plaza.

Although I've been to Hong Kong countless times, it was my first time to stay at Holiday Inn Express. It cost US$160 per night when we booked, inclusive of free breakfast. Well, you don't really get much choice in the matter because every reservation automatically comes with free breakfast even if the online booking site (like agoda.com) says otherwise. The good news is, breakfast is actually decent... but more on that later.

I just checked now and at the time of this posting the rate is at US$135 per night. It's really a matter of luck when booking online, but as a general rule you get cheaper rates and more options if you book something like 3 months before the trip. We booked it a month before so choices were more limited.

Holiday Inn Express Hotel Hong Kong ReviewWe got a Standard Room, which was the least expensive type available. At least you can specify you want a non-smoking floor. It came with a double bed that was all neatly folded and turned since we arrived around 9pm in the evening. There's a digital safe by the bedside too.

Holiday Inn Express Hotel Hong Kong ReviewThe room also has a study / dresser area with a mirror and a LAN cable so you can avail of the free unlimited broadband internet service. Problem was, my stupid HP Mini 311 doesn't seem to have an ethernet controller built-in so I could not use it. My friends who did told me that the connection is very fast though. There's also a TV, hair dryer, and an electric kettle so you can use the complimentary coffee and tea packets. There's a sofa located on the right side of the room from this view, I forgot to take a photo. :p

Holiday Inn Express Hotel Hong Kong ReviewThere's a built-in closet with a small refrigerator, two pairs of bedroom slippers, hangers, and extra pillows. The closet door has a head-to-toe mirror attached to it.

Pond's Flawless White Challenge + a raffle for you!

Being one of Pond's online beauty ambassadors, I was recently asked to find a partner and take on the Pond's Flawless White Unbeaten challenge.

Pond's Flawless White ChallengeI asked my childhood friend Cathy if she wanted to take on the challenge with me. She's an entrepreneur, a physician, and a hands-on mom all at the same time. It was quite tricky trying to get our schedules together, especially since both of us were going to be travelling with the family for a portion of the time that the challenge would be ongoing. I thought we could just muster up the powers of the internet, video calls, emails, chat, and the like.

Unfortunately for me, a significant portion of the challenge turned out to be voting. There's an FB Like button on the upper left corner of our page on the Pond's microsite which people have to click. The top three teams with the most votes will be shortlisted for final judging. *sniff*

If you've been reading my blog for a while, you would know how much I disapprove of FB likes contests. As in I am totally against it. There's too much cheating... from a gazillion dummy accounts to automated scripts that generate hundreds of likes. False ROI as I always say. But here I am. Truth be told I feel like a total hypocrite campaigning and asking for votes and I hate every second of it. Don't get me wrong... I love Pond's products and I'm always willing to test, use, and share my experiences with everyone. I just really abhor FB likes contests.

Anyways, I won't bore you with my beef against the contest mechanics dear readers. If you can spare a few seconds of your time, please do log on to http://www.ponds.com.ph/unbeaten/blogs/rowenalei.php and click that little "like" button on the upper left side.

For this tiny favor, I will be raffling off the following Pond's products:

To make it easy for me to keep track of all of you who voted, please do leave a comment here or on my FB page so that I'm sure not to miss anyone when I raffle these off. There will be three (3) winners among all the voters.

UPDATE: Thanks all for liking, from liker #223 and onwards, please do indicate your like number when you post on this thread. :)

Thank you! I hope this is the last time I have to do this (campaign I mean). O_O

Maybelline New York's Stiletto Run at Robinson's Place Manila

I was invited to Maybelline New York's Stiletto Run held at Robinson's Place Manila last March 15, 2011.

Maybelline Stiletto Run Robinsons Place ManilaI had the option to participate in the race, but I'm not crazy enough to attempt running in stilettos. I mean... I trip in my Crocs as it is. Me racing in stilettos is just suicide.

Maybelline Long Extreme Stiletto MascaraThis is actually to celebrate one of Maybelline's revolutionary new products -- Maybelline Long Extreme Stiletto Mascara. We were told that this mascara does for your lashes what stilettos do for your legs... which is make them look longer.

At around 4pm, the runners were all asked to gather at the starting point of the race. I don't think I've ever seen so many high heels and stilettos in my life. I noticed though that some contestants weren't wearing stilettos but pumps. I hope next time the organizers would be more strict in implementing the stiletto rule because it won't be fair to all concerned. I secretly prayed that those who followed the guidelines would win. :D

Maybelline Stiletto Run Robinsons Place ManilaI couldn't follow the girls to the starting point to take photos as they ran. There were too many people. I stayed by the finish line so I could take photos of the winners. The total distance covered was 220 meters, which is like... wow. It's even harder than a 100m dash and they were in pointy heels too! True enough, a short while later a girl wearing eyeglasses practically tumbled to the finish line. She winced in pain. I knew she sprained her ankle badly. She couldn't get up, even as some of the folks around tried to hold her up. I can just imagine how excruciating it is to try and stand on 4-inch stilettos with a twisted ankle. I have to salute her. At least everyone who won were in stilettos. :)

Yoshinoya + Century Bangus = Bangus Kabayaki and more!

Yoshinoya and Century Bangus held a food-tasting session for bloggers at the Century Culinary Circle last March 14, 2011.

Test kitchen at Century Culinary CircleYoshinoya and Century's test kitchen can be found inside the Century Culinary Circle. This is actually where they develop recipes for the two brands. In case you're wondering why these two brands are working so closely together, it's because Century is the Philippine franchise holder for Yoshinoya.

Dishes made with Century BangusThe first set brought out was a trio of delicious dishes straight from the kitchen. They all had one thing in common: Century Bangus! Just in case you're not from the Philippines, Bangus is our country's national fish and it's called Milkfish in English. :)

Century Bangus Salad with Caramelized Pear and WalnutsI had Century Bangus Salad with Caramelized Pear and Walnuts first. I loved the combination of the light vinaigrette with crisp greens, juicy cherry tomatoes, tasty bangus bits, and sweet pieces of pears and walnuts. It's really one of the best salads I've eaten. Good thing Century shared the recipe with us so I can at least try to make it at home. I'd like to share it with everyone here:

Century Bangus Salad with Caramelized Pear and Walnuts

Ingredients:

1/4 cup cooking oil
1-450 grams Century Premium Boneless Bangus Marinated

Caramelized Pears:
2 tablespoon granulated sugar
1 cup canned pear, sliced

Honey Lemon Vinaigrette:
1/4 cup lemon juice
2 tablespoons honey
salt & pepper to taste
1 cup extra virgin olive oil

6 cups mixed greens
1/2 cup chopped toasted walnuts
1/2 cup cherry tomatoes
3 tablespoons reduced balsamic vinegar

*To reduce balsamic vinegar: Pour 2 cups balsamic vinegar into a skillet or saucepan. Allow it to simmer with occasional stirring for about 5 minutes until a little syrupy or desired consistency is achieved. Remove from heat to allow it to thicken some more as it cools.

Procedure:

Heat cooking oil in a large pan and fry Century Bangus until golden. Spoon out bangus meat from the skin and set aside. Sprinkle sugar on pears. Pan-grill on a skillet brushed lightly with oil until caramelized. Set aside. Whisk together lemon juice, honey, salt, pepper & extra virgin olive oil. Cover and chill until ready to serve.

Toss together mixed greens, walnuts, and cherry tomatoes. Arrange on a plate topped with bangus flakes and caramelized pears. Drizzle with vinaigrette and reduced balsamic vinegar.

Makes 6 servings.

My Sun Broadband Wireless Prepaid experience!

Last week, our wired broadband connection went dead so I was forced to buy my first dongle. I had a lot of things riding on the internet -- submission of my magazine features, social networking projects, answering important emails, and of course my blog. It goes without saying that I really can't be without a connection.

Sun Broadband Wireless Prepaid ReviewThere are only three wireless broadband services instantly available to me: Smart Bro, Globe Tattoo, and Sun Broadband Wireless. I decided to go for Sun after reading through customer feedback in forums and consulting with my fellow bloggers. Despite really fancy ad campaigns for Smart Bro and especially Globe Tattoo, everyone basically agreed that Globe Tattoo is worthless (that is not my opinion, I've never tried Globe Tattoo). I've tried Smart Bro on a couple of occasions care of a fellow blogger and connection was intermittent (well, we were in Boracay at the time so that might have had something to do with it). Anyways, internet savvy people I've talked to had nice words for Sun Broadband Wireless so that was what I ended up getting.

Sun Broadband Wireless Prepaid ReviewI opted for prepaid Sun Broadband Wireless since it was to serve as my emergency back-up connection. For P1,245 I got myself:

  • a brand spanking new dongle / portable modem
  • a Sun Broadband Wireless prepaid sim card
  • 120 hours of free wireless broadband access good for one (1) month
  • 1,000 free Sun-to-Sun SMS

Sun Broadband Wireless Prepaid ReviewYou plug in the dongle to your computer and it automatically installs Sun Cellular's Broadband Wireless software.

Cafe Ysabel by Chef Gene Gonzales

My uncle celebrated his 60th birthday at Cafe Ysabel along P. Guevara St. some time ago. We all had a four-course set dinner which was pre-ordered for the occasion.

Cafe Ysabel by Chef Gene Gonzales San Juan ReviewThe inner dining area of Cafe Ysabel is lavishly decorated. The tapestries, chandeliers, and painted ceilings all exude a classic ambiance. Smoking isn't allowed in this section too, so if you want a pleasant and intimate dining experience, this is the place to reserve.

Cafe Ysabel San Juan ReviewWe started off with an appetizer of Caesar's Salad with Spicy Shrimp. This was after we were served House Bread with Dip. I liked the salad. Crisp lettuce, crunchy croutons, bacon bits, and succulent shrimps were tossed in the most perfect tasting Caesar dressing then topped with parmesan cheese.

Cafe Ysabel San Juan ReviewNext up was Onion Consomme Gratin, better known as French Onion Soup. The soup is tasty and comforting. The gooey melted mozarella cheese rests on top of a slice of french bread. Yummy!

My Awesome.ph online deal-shopping experience!

As promised, I will review each and every online deal site that I buy from. I completed my first transaction from Plejee, and just yesterday I was able to avail of what I bought from Awesome.ph.

Awesome.ph Deal Site Review Some time ago I spotted this deal on Awesome.ph -- 52% off on Yuko Yamashita Hair Treatment System from Akira Salon... which means that from the original price of P2,000 I could get it for only P960. I didn't think, I immediately clicked Buy Now. If it's something I really spend on it's my hair, because I have terrible hair. I was the 6th buyer to purchase and the deal would not activate until 20 people buy. I immediately campaigned for more people to join me via FB and my blog. Good thing that by the end of the time limit, over 50 people had bought. That meant I was getting my Yuko Yamashita Hair Treatment for P960!

Awesome.ph deal site reviewIt was a very straightforward experience. After clicking Buy Now, I was asked to log in my account and confirm my payment details. I chose to pay via Paypal. I entered my Paypal details and voila! I had successfully "reserved" my coupon. My Paypal funds were to be deducted if the deal turns on and after the time limit expires. It was quick, the whole thing was done in a few clicks.

Awesome.ph deal site reviewI got an email notification that my Akira Salon coupon was ready right after the deal time had expired. In order to view your coupon, all you need to do is log in to your Awesome.ph account. Another great thing about this deal site is its CSR or Corporate Social Responsibility. They aim to be environment-friendly and so printing out your coupon is highly discouraged. All you need to do is copy the coupon code onto your cellphone and you're good to go.

Are you an ICAn? If you are (and even if you're not) check this out...

My aunt handed me a book to read a couple of weeks ago. The title is "A Cut Above: Stories of ICAns Who Have Made a Difference". So yes, I am dedicating this post to all my relatives and friends who are from Immaculate Conception Academy (ICA). I myself graduated from another Chinese school... but that's another story.

A Cut Above: Stories of ICAns who have made a differenceA Cut Above is a compilation of essays about ICA alumnae who have committed to a life of making a difference.

Julie Yap-Daza in A Cut AboveIt features well known ICAns who have made their mark in society like journalist Julie Yap-Daza...

Teresita Sy-Coson in A Cut Above...and Teresita Sy-Coson, who is perhaps the Philippines' most powerful woman CEO. I think I liked her story best as it was a very interesting read (for me at least). I've always wanted to know how someone in her position thinks.

Chef's Table Fort Bonifacio Global City

*This establishment is now closed.*

Our friend Richard bought a bunch of Chef's Table vouchers from Deal Grocer at 50% off some time back. Now that only means one thing -- dinner at Chef's Table! Each of us ended up shelling out P250 for P500 worth of food.

Chef's Table The Fort ReviewAnyways, upon being seated, you would notice that besides the utensils and napkin, there's also a pencil set in front of you. This is so you can doodle on the brown paper that serves as your table cloth. Oops I forgot to include the fork in the photo. :P

Chef's Table The Fort ReviewI ordered Hot Rock Pusit (P250, pictured above) for appetizers. I was stupefied by what we got, which was four small pieces of squid. In other establishments, P250 would buy you a whole dish full of calamari. Since there was more than four of us dining not everyone got to try this. The squid was incredibly soft and squishy. I think I tasted some of the beer-based marinade. This was supposedly pressed in between hot rocks. It comes out to P60+ per piece of squid. Um... I don't think I have to tell you it's not worth it.

Chef's Table The Fort reviewI also opted for the Calamansi Tuyo Spaghetti (P210, pictured above). I liked the flavor contrast of the olive-oil based sauce, salted fish, and citrusy calamansi.

Sony Summer HotSpots 2011 at SM Megamall!

I attended the press luncheon of Sony Summer HotSpots 2011 in SM Megamall yesterday after I dropped off my kids from school. Good thing classes were only till 10:30am so I was free to go.

Sony Summer HotSpots 2011 SM MegamallSony Philippines presented its hottest summer gadgets in the most entertaining way. There were a lot of colorful performances which involved acrobatic dancing.

Sony NEX Alpha Camera

Models paraded around holding the gadgets too.

Sony Summer Hotspots 2011 SM MegamallThere was even a tiny bit of cosplay for the Playstation 3 portion of the program. Featured were Gran Turismo 5 and God of War.
