I was only able to take one shot of the counter because the guard forbade us from doing so. Anyway, let's jump straight to the food served that night. I won't be repeating the dishes that I already featured on my first Shiok post.
Steamed Kailan (P65, pictured above) was one of the first dishes to be served. Kailan, a vegetable with broad flat leaves and thick stems is also known as Chinese broccoli. Shiok serves it up steamed and drizzled with a bit of oyster sauce. Yummy! Just pass on their chicken rice and I'm all set. :)
We had Nasi Goreng Ikan Bilis (P160, pictured above), which is fried rice cooked with eggs, shrimp, crunchy dilis, and veggies served with a bit of sambal on the side. Sambal is a chili-based sauce that's a commonly used condiment in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. I liked the flavorful rice and the sambal a lot. It was done just right, not overly greasy.
We were served two kinds of soup, but since I have limited tummy space, I opted for a bowl of Nonya Laksa (P325, pictured above). The serving size is good for sharing. It's pretty spicy but too coconut-y for my tastes. They don't skimp on the ingredients though as the soup is filled to the brim with prawns, fish cake, tofu, laksa leaves, and hard-boiled eggs. I only had a few spoonfuls of this.
We were each given a glass of the perfect drink to balance the hot and spicy dishes -- Yuan Yang (P55, pictured above) which is coffee with milk tea on ice. The milk serves to neutralize the spicier flavors. It's pretty strong though so you may think twice about drinking it at night if you're easily affected by caffeine.
Premium Soy Chicken was one of my favorite dishes of the night. I normally dislike chicken but this is really another level of chicken. It's lean and flavorful. It's soooo good. We were told the chicken is actually imported.
Smashed Chicken (P140, pictured above) is a unique dish of spiced fried chicken topped with seasoned tempura flakes. It's served with fried potatoes, kangkong, and sambal on the side. Delicious! Yes, I noticed Shiok is really good with chicken. XD
Beef Rendang (P345, pictured above) was up next. I enjoyed every bite of the tender melt-in-your mouth beef simmered in coconut cream and chilies. It's a very spicy dish though and I have high tolerance for spicy foods so it may not be for everyone. :)
Nasi Bojari, also known as "dish for royalty" is a complete meal comprised of spiced fried chicken, beef rendang, and assam prawns served with a special fried rice. This is a great way to sample many dishes and flavors all at once.
We had two kinds of dessert. First one out was Roti Kaya. Roti is unleavened bread made from stoneground wholemeal flour while kaya is Singaporean/Malaysian coconut jam. The Roti is filled with Shiok's very own homemade kaya.
They serve a small dipping bowl of kaya on the side too. I liked the combination of the chewy roti and slightly sweet and creamy kaya.
Pisang Goreng was our other dessert. Banana fritters are topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, Milo powder, and syrupy gula melaka (palm sugar). Yummy! Please note that with the exception of the Nonya Laksa and Beef Rendang, I referred to the old Shiok menu from their FB page for pricing. I know they've increased their prices and so the prices of the other food items should be at about +P20 more. I'm trying to get updated prices and I will correct the figures as soon as I'm able to do so.
We'll definitely be back!
