To make a long story short, according to Margaux, there's a PR firm and a Big Bad Blogger (BBB) going around trying to extort money from restaurants. How? BBB will go to the restaurant, eat, and then post an online review. PR agency allegedly tries to get the restaurant to pay in order to ensure good reviews from BBB. Refusal to pay will make the PR agency unleash BBB's wrath via a very bad review.
Imagine my surprise when I heard that a friend of mine actually got the very same "offer" from the PR firm. Yes, she named the firm. And no, I am not ready to believe that this firm will risk everything just for something like this because they are quite well-known in the field and they are handling a lot of high profile clients. I have worked with them in non-blog projects and so far they have been professional and competent.
What if, just what if... someone is out to ruin this PR firm? Maybe someone is out there indeed making these extortionist offers and then using the PR firm's name to do it. It has occured to people that maybe PR firm is using BBB's name to get some business via extortion, but what if it were the other way around? Maybe someone is using PR firm's name without them knowing it.
I am not taking sides, but given all that this firm has to lose and what superficial payolas they stand to gain if they were indeed engaging in this activity, it makes no sense.
