L'oreal Paris Philippines Black and White Event

I've had a fascination for make-up and beauty products ever since I was a kid. I remember my aunt's dresser which had piles and piles of cosmetics. My childhood friend Jeo (she's a girl) and I would play around with them when auntie wasn't around -- painting our faces and having a good laugh afterwards.

Inside L'oreal Paris PhilippinesImagine the thrill of exploring the L'oreal Philippines HQ for the first time last October 11, 2010. Yeah, this is an insanely late post, but I just had to tell you all about my life-changing hair experience with L'oreal Total Repair 5 first. All the hair, make-up, and skin care products that L'oreal is currently carrying were all lined up in this wonderful room.

Table setting at L'oreal Philippines Black & White EventI loved the quaint table settings. It was a small, intimate event and L'oreal really went out of its way to make it a memorable one.

L'oreal White Perfect Rosy Day Cream SPF 17First to be introduced was the L'oreal Perfect White Rosy Day Cream SPF 17. I can't live without sun protection and so it was quite exciting for me. The product promises fairer and rosier complexion thanks to Melanin-Vanish and Tourmaline Gemstone. Hmmm... that would be kind of hard to measure in my case because I've been told by make-up artists time and again that my complexion is already fair with a pinkish cast. Nevertheless I'm lining it up for a product review. :)

Create.Connect.Entertain. with Nokia N8 and Nokia C7 + Contest Alert!

I attended Nokia's Create.Connect.Entertain event last Oct. 15, 2010. It was mainly all about showcasing the Nokia N8's impressive film-making abilities.

Nokia Create.Connect.Entertain eventNokia commissioned three directors to create short films that are about a couple of minutes in length using the Nokia N8 to shoot and edit.

Nokia Create.Connect.Entertain event
All three films were showcased on the small screens and the big screen.

The above, entitled "Frank Da Crank" by Treb Montero II was one of the featured Nokia N8 films. I was very impressed because it was shown on the gigantic LED screen during the event and the quality was still excellent. The Nokia N8's movie-making capabilities are truly amazing. If I was into making videos I'd get this phone in a heartbeat I tell ya.

Lunch special at Hana, Little Tokyo

A couple of Sundays ago, The Club (our foodie friends group) decided to go Japanese. We originally planned to go to Wabi Sabi Noodle House only to find out that they're closed on Sundays. Thus we proceeded to Hana in Little Tokyo instead.

Takoyaki at Hana, Little TokyoA visit to Hana is not complete without ordering their authentic Takoyaki (octopus balls). One order consists of six pieces and costs P120, the photo above shows two orders combined. It's really yummy, each ball is made of pancake-like batter filled with octopus chunks and a little bit of pickled ginger. It's topped with Japanese mayonnaise, bonito flakes, and brown sauce that is similar (if not the same as) to tonkatsu sauce.

Chawan Mushi at Hana, Little TokyoI ordered one of Hana's lunch specials. For P270, I was getting Miso Soup, Chawan Mushi (pictured above), Wakame Soba, Salmon Onigiri, and dessert. I could also have free rice if I wanted to. Chawan Mushi is a savory Japanese egg custard dish that is usually filled with a shrimp, small pieces of pork, a bit of mushroom... it's really smooth, flavorful, and delicious. It's served warm too.

Wakame Soba at Hana, Little TokyoThen came my Wakame Soba. Wakame is a type of seaweed, it's those dark green leaves floating on the left side of my bowl in the photo above. I liked the nice, clean, and slightly sweet taste of the soup. It tasted very natural. The noodles were cooked perfectly al dente.

Philippine Fashion Week opens with a lot of luxe from Pond's Gold Radiance!

Time for another break from the backlogs! Philippine Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2011 is here -- and it's happening till Oct. 30, 2010!

I admit it: I hate going to the SM Mall of Asia. It's far from where I live and going there in the middle of weekday rush hour during a -ber month is really asking for big time punishment.

I am exasperated at the fact that the entire Philippine Fashion Week is unfolding there. Much as I'd like to see several shows that I had been invited to, I regret to say I declined everything except for the Pond's Gold Radiance fashion show last Oct. 26, 2010 featuring creations by designers Dennis Lustico, JC Buendia, Jun Escario, and Rajo Laurel.

Needless to say, the theme of the night was gold. Dennis Lustico and JC Buendia's creations were modelled first. Unfortunately, I was still finding my angle and getting used to the models' pace. In short, all my photos of the first two collections suck. Luckily, I got the hang of it by the time Jun Escario's golden gowns came out. He was the third in line. The finale was of course, Rajo Laurel's collection.

Anti-aging with Ponds Gold Radiance

We were introduced to Pond's latest beauty innovation last Oct. 18, 2010 during an intimate dinner with the Pond's team at M Cafe.

Ponds Gold Radiance anti-aging lineYes, it's another anti-aging line as my blog post title suggests. It's all gold as you can see, and it's not just the packaging. Each product contains real gold microparticles for an instant sheen upon application and a host of other benefits with extended use.

Rhesa May Manaloto-Martinez, MD, FPDSPDS-certified (Philippine Dermatological Society) dermatologist Dr. Rhesa May Manaloto-Martinez shared that throughout history, gold has been used for rejuvenation. Did you know that Cleopatra would wear a gold facial mask to sleep? In western medicine, gold has proven to be anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial so it also promotes wound healing.

Gold also:
  • helps improve skin elasticity
  • prevents skin sagging
  • improves circulation
As a result you get firmer skin -- no wonder it is considered a rejuvenator in Ayurvedic medicine.

Pond's Gold Radiance bloggers
There was just a handful of us at dinner.
From left to right: me, Jheng, and Lace.

Pond's Gold Radiance Anti-aging lineThe Pond's Gold Radiance anti-aging line will be available in stores this November. This is just the first in a series of Pond's Gold Radiance posts that I will be doing, and somewhere along the way one of you lucky readers will get to win a limited edition gold Aranaz peacock bag and Pond's Gold Radiance products. Only 150 bags were produced for Pond's special friends, and one of you will get to own one!

Keep your eyes peeled for more of Pond's Gold Radiance in this blog, okay? I am currently on day 2 of my Pond's Gold Radiance 7-day challenge... more on that in the coming days. :)

10 years of Olay Total Effects

I still remember my first bottle of Olay Total Effects a few years back. I found it to be very foundation-like as it was tinted flesh and it smelled like make-up. Unfortunately, my skin didn't like it. My face got all red and it stung. I got to try Olay Regenerist cleanser and eye cream recently, and both agreed with me.

Olay Ageless Event at Manila PeninsulaLast October 13, 2010, Olay Total Effects celebrated 10 years of helping women achieve beautiful and ageless skin. The event was graced by Olay beauty ambassadors Daphne Osena-Paez and Miriam Quiambao.

Olay Beauty Ambassador Daphne Osena-PaezEveryone gave updates on what they're doing at present while sharing how they balance the demands of being a woman (wife, mother, career person, etc).

Olay beauty ambassador Miriam QuiambaoThe common denominator among these remarkable women was the fact that each one is a long-time Olay user. The event also served to showcase how Olay had played a role in helping them preserve their youthful beauty.

Olay Total Effects skincare lineAs you can see, the Olay Total Effects skin care line has expanded to several products -- including an eye cream, a serum, a facial wash... I will be reviewing a couple of Olay products over the coming weeks, so I'll let you know how that goes. Hopefully they've reformulated and the products won't cause any adverse reactions this time around.

Have you tried Olay Total Effects?

Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 + McAfee Wavesecure = Security

I'm a die hard Sony Ericsson mobile phone loyalist. Yes, my last five phones prior to the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini that I am using now were all SE phones. In fact, the first colored cellphone I've ever owned was the Sony Ericsson T68.

My cellphone history:
  1. Sony Ericsson T68
  2. Sony Ericsson z320i
  3. Sony Ericsson z600i (stolen)
  4. Sony Ericsson w300i (still in use as my Sun phone)
  5. Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 (still in my closet, I hate Windows Mobile)
  6. Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini (now in use as my main phone)
Sony Ericsson Xperia X8So naturally, when I was invited to witness the unveiling of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X8, I said yes in a heartbeat.

Like my Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini, the Xperia X8 is an android phone... meaning it runs on Android, the OS (Operating System) developed by Google. It's really like having a mini computer in your hands since you can email, Facebook, download apps, and even watch Youtube videos on it.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 front viewIt's bigger than my Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini, but it works more or less the same way. Too bad that's just a dummy phone up there, there were too many people lined up to play with the real thing... :p

I promise to post a very detailed review of my cellphone instead -- I think I'm in a good position to provide an accurate one since I've been using it for 3 months already.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 back viewCheck out the cool matte casing with that gradient color scheme. I love it! Oooh before I forget, another important thing about the Xperia X8 is that it comes with the McAfee Wavesecure.

McAfee Wavesecure press briefingMcAfee Wavesecure is pre-installed in Sony Ericsson Xperia X8. It lets users back up data (SMS, call logs, contacts, and media) to their secure server and it can all be restored on any smart phone of their choice. Another great thing about this is it protects your data in case your cellphone gets stolen. You can remotely lock your phone and wipe all data. You can even track your lost phone through map locations.

You can use McAfee Wavesecure for three (3) months free of charge if you purchase the Sony Ericsson Xperia X8. Afterwards, licensing would cost an estimated P895 a year. If you have other Sony Ericsson android phones in your possession, you can simply download this application from Marketplace. The Sony Ericsson Xperia X8's suggested retail price is P11,600.

Hooray for Sony Ericsson. Love it! :p

Van Marley's Dutchkins

One random night, we decided to go and have dessert at this tiny little place called Van Marley's.

Van Marley's Katipunan ReviewThere is one absolutely MUST ORDER in their menu, where all food items are under P200 so far... and those are their Dutchkins. Dutchkins are fluffy, chewy, and addictive baby pancakes which are about the size of a big coin. You can order them with your choice of toppings:

  • Original Powdered Sugar and Butter (P125)
  • Whipped Berry Mix Cream Cheese (P125, pictured above)
  • Whipped Lemon Cream Cheese (P125)
  • Nutella and Praline Sauce (P130)
You can also add P12 for a scoop of ice cream to accompany your Dutchkins. I picked the Whipped Berry Mix Cream Cheese on my first try, going against the popular choice which is Nutella and Praline Sauce.

Van Marley's KatipunanI totally made the right decision. My friends ordered Dutchkins with Nutella and Praline Sauce and I found it overly sweet, whereas my berry and cream cheese combo had just the right amount of creaminess, tartness, and tang. It went perfectly with the powder sugar that's dusted on top of each Dutchkin you order, so there was also sweetness to it. I can't get over how fluffy and chewy these babies are. It's so hard to stop yourself from popping one Dutchkin after another into your mouth.

Drop by and give them a try when you're in the area. Van Marley's open daily at 2pm.

L'oreal Paris Total Repair 5... it really works!

I'm in constant war with my hair for at least a few months every year, during that stage when the straightened parts grow out considerably and I have those things called unsightly roots.

L'oreal Total Repair 5 lineI was challenged by L'oreal Paris Total Repair 5 the moment I saw it on Facebook with Anne Curtis modelling her lush and lavish locks. I wonder how it would fare against my hair? I was fortunate to have gotten the whole set right after I had my hair straightened again this year.

Finished product of Shuji Kida Hair Salon's Japanese StraighteningThis is my hair immediately after my latest dose of Japanese Magnetic Hair Straightening at Shuji Kida Hair Salon. I had it done last Oct. 10, 2010. I was still at the salon when I took this photo.

L'oreal Total Repair 5 Repairing Shampoo
Step 1: L'oreal Total Repair 5 Repairing Shampoo (P99 for 180ml, pictured above).

I had a whiff of the fresh fruity scent right away after I opened the bottle. The shampoo is quite light in consistency and lathers easily as soon as it makes contact with your wet hair. I could tell right away that the Total Repair 5 line was going to work on my hair because even when wet under the shower it felt softer.

Chocolate Mix from Chicago Popcorn Shops!

Last week, I attended the Nokia Connect.Create.Entertain. event (will post about it soon) and I was given an impressive-looking tin marked Chicago Popcorn Shops.

Popcorn from Chicago Popcorn Shops
Thank you Nokia! :p

Chocolate Mix popcorn from Chicago Popcorn ShopsI swear, the toasty aroma of caramel and freshly popped corn wafted out of the tin as soon as I opened it. Everyone in the room got all excited.

Chicago Popcorn Shops Chocolate MixEach big, round, and fluffy popcorn kernel was coated with crisp caramel and laced with chocolate. It's so good that my hubby, who's normally not fond of sweet things which include caramel and chocolate, has consumed a sizeable portion of our big tin already!

Chocolate Mix popcorn from Chicago Popcorn ShopsCheck out this piece! It's massive and perfect for munching. A big tin like we had here costs P300, although kiddie, single, and double size bags are also available with prices ranging from P20 to P120. Other flavors are cheese, butter, Karamel Krisp, and Chicago Mix (cheese + caramel).

I'm sold, this will definitely be on my Christmas gift list! :D

Newsbreak: SSI Super Sale powered by Citibank!

I'm going to insert this post amidst all my backlogs since the SSI Super Sale just started today and is ending on Sunday, October 24.

Okay, if there's something my hubby can't resist, it's a designer sale. So when he heard of the SSI (Store Specialists Inc.) - Citibank sale happening from October 21 to 24, 2010 at the PICC Forum Tent 3 he was clearly stoked.

SSI Citibank Sale at PICC Forum TentSince we had to take care of some business first, we weren't there when the doors first opened. As a result, we ended up parking really far away from the tent. It was pure pandemonium, there were people everywhere. Brands like Gucci, Salvatore Ferragamo, Burberry, Lacoste, Gap, Zara, Prada, Banana Republic, Hugo Boss, DKNY Jeans, etc. all had shelves, tables, and racks of bags, shoes, and clothes on display which would disappear in the blink of an eye.

SSI Citibank Super SaleLines to the cashier were long. It'll take you at least an hour to finally get to pay up, maybe more if you go later.

Modelco Lash WandI was only able to purchase a single item, and it was from Beauty Bar. I bought Modelco Lash Wand, a heated eyelash curler. It's like a little curling iron for your eyelashes. I was mulling over it when I bumped into my friend Chie who's from Beauty Bar. She told me that this is a good alternative to a traditional eyelash curler because it doesn't put stress on your lashes.

Modelco Lash Wand Heated Eyelash CurlerYou know what? I do dislike using the traditional eyelash curler, even if I have a Shu Uemura one which everyone practically raves over. It's inevitable to occasionally lose an eyelash or two when using it and I can't afford that at this age!

The best part is, I got this for 65% off... from P1650 marked down to P481.50! There were only about five units displayed so I don't know if there's any left for tomorrow.

Other finds at the SSI Super Sale:
  • Laura Mercier, Stila, and Nars cosmetics at 30% off
  • Zara shawls for less than P500
  • Aerosoles shoes for half the price
  • Denman hairbrushes at 25% off
  • Stride Ride shoes for kids (wasn't able to check the discount)
  • Samsonite luggages
There's also a raffle conducted every hour where you can win gifts from SSI. When I was there they raffled off a LeSportsac bag.

You can also go even if you don't have a Citibank card but I think you'll have to apply for one.

There's a bit of bad news though, the salespeople told me they won't be replenishing the stocks on sale. Everything that was displayed today is all there is, and I saw for myself how quickly the Lacoste section got wiped out. There were about 7 or 8 Gucci bags initially displayed, by the time we left there were only 3 left.

UPDATE: My friend went back on the second day (Friday, Oct 22) and told me that despite earlier statements about not replenishing stocks, the sale items had been re-stocked so there were more stuff to buy.

My hubby was able to buy a pair of Hugo Boss pants which had been marked down 80% from over P10k to a little over P2k.

Contrary to the information circulating that they open at 11am, doors actually open at 10:30am. There are food stalls by Red Kimono and Yellow Cab Pizza right outside the entrance in case you get hungry but don't want to leave.

What to do one year after Shuji Kida's hair straightening?

I had my hair undergo Japanese Magnetic Straightening at Shuji Kida Hair Salon more than one year ago. Full details here - http://animetric.blogspot.com/2009/09/japanese-magnetic-hair-straightening-at.html

Japanese Magnetic Hair Straightening at Shuji Kida Hair SalonSince my hair is naturally coarse, thick, and wavy, I had unsightly roots one year after. I wasn't able to take a before photo to show you the roots because I had my hair blow dried straight the night before for our high school class reunion. Let me just tell you, it looks crappy which is why I'm always in a ponytail of late. The roots are wavy and puffy then I had straight ends. Ugh.

Shigeki Ogaki of Shuji Kida Hair Salon working on my hairI called Shuji Kida Hair Salon and asked what can be done. Did I need to go in for another full rebond? I was informed that I did not. What they would do was a retouch, meaning they would only straighten the regrowth and not treat the hair that had already undergone the process before. I was relieved because double done hair will surely be heavily damaged afterwards. Again, Japanese stylist Shigeki Ogaki worked on me.

Simple snacks from Shuji KidaSince the procedure would take about three hours, I was served a simple snack consisting of hot tea (as I requested, they can serve other drinks) and an assortment of biscuits. In the meantime I read numerous magazines to pass the time.

Finished product of Shuji Kida Hair Salon's Japanese Straightening...and voila! I have nice hair again. I admit the ends are more dry this time, because albeit Shigeki did not really treat the ends, it's unavoidable that they would get touched by the straightening solution. Not really a problem though. I washed my hair 48 hours after as instructed by Shigeki and it came out really nice. My hair is currently on L'oreal Total Repair 5, but that's another post. :D

Why I choose to have my hair straightened at Shuji Kida Hair Salon:
  • I find the price reasonable for the quality of the service. The first time I had it done for my whole head, I was charged P6,800. My hair still looked good 6 months after (see here - http://animetric.blogspot.com/2010/03/six-months-after-my-shuji-kida-hair.html), and it took 13 months before I went back again for a retouch.

  • Retouch is a bit less expensive compared to having your whole head done plus it spares hair that was previously straightened from damage.

  • The Japanese stylist does the whole process each time. Since rebonding was pioneered by the Japanese, I feel better knowing my hair is in the hands of a pro. Nothing against other stylists okay? It's just my personal preference.

  • Hair does not look stiff and fake after this process. It's touchably soft. If I don't tell people I had it straightened, they wouldn't even suspect.

  • You can wear headbands, clips, or even ponytail holders and it'd go back to the way it was -- perfectly straight.

  • You can color your hair one week after the procedure.

  • They don't badger you with treatments, procedures, and products that you don't need. :p

Here's my full hair history at Shuji Kida Hair Salon:

I love Shuji Kida Hair Salon!!! In fact I spent my birthday there this year when I had my hair retouched last October 10. I want to make it clear that I did not get a free service, I paid for the whole procedure just as I did last year. I'm just a really happy customer. The owner did give me a nice birthday gift though. :D

Obagi celebrates 11 years in the Philippines!

I've been hearing people rave about Obagi for years, and that includes girlfriends, celebrities, and even my mother-in-law. Over the years, Obagi has become synonymous with clear, flawless, and glowing skin.

Aimee DeMarais of ObagiWhen I was invited to House of Obagi's blogger gathering to celebrate its 11th anniversary in the Philippines, I was really looking forward to it. I wanted to get acquainted with the brand and find out for myself what's behind all the hype. We were oriented by no less than Obagi's International Education and Marketing Manager Aimee DeMarais (pictured above).

Aimee explained that Obagi is a skin transformation system that is actually clinically prescribed. Yup, you can't just buy a set over-the-counter without a prescription.

Roasted Honey Duck Rolls at M CafeWe were allowed to ask questions during Aimee's presentation. An animated discussion happened over delicious food and drink from M Cafe. Those are Roasted Honey Duck Rolls pictured above. :D

Here are a couple of lines from Obagi's skin care systems:
  • Obagi Clenziderm M.D. Systems - A 3-step therapeutic acne treatment system that comes in 2 variants: Normal-to-Oily and Normal-to-Dry
  • Obagi NuDerm System - A transforming system that penetrates deep into the skin and boosts cellular functions to help it look and act younger.
Obagi ELASTIlashWhat I'm really excited about though is ELASTILash, Obagi's latest innovation. Aimee gave us a sneak peek. It's not available in the Philippines yet but it will soon be. Obagi ELASTILash thickens, strengthens, and lengthens your eyelashes so you won't need falsies or extensions.

Weekend treat at Haagen Dazs SM Megamall

Hubby and I decided to splurge a bit some weekends ago with the kids. We decided on Haagen Dazs at the Mega Atrium in SM Megamall.

At Haagen Dazs SM Mega AtriumWe liked that it was very relaxed since it was right after lunch. There weren't too many people, in fact I think we were the only ones seated at the time. We were given these colorful hardbound picture books to order from -- yes, those actually are menus.

Haagen Dazs FondueWe eventually decided on the Fondue (P880, pictured above) for the four of us (hubby, myself, son, daughter) to share. It came with 16 mini-scoops of ice cream in Macadamia Nut, Strawberry, Cookies and Cream, and Coffee flavors. There were also spongecake cubes, cookies, fresh fruits, picola sticks, and roasted almonds -- all for dipping into the rich chocolate sauce.

Fondue at Haagen Dazs SM MegamallThe fresh fruits included bananas, green apples, and strawberries. The chocolate sauce was kept liquid and slightly heated by a votive candle under the bowl.

Haagen Dazs FondueWhen you dip a mini-scoop of ice cream into the chocolate and let it stand a bit, it sort of freezes over and forms a crisp chocolate coating. You can roll it onto the small bowl of chopped almonds right after dipping so you get a chocolate and nut coated treat.

A pricey indulgence but worth trying at least once. :)
