Healthy summer skin with Neutrogena!

Neutrogena whisked off a handful of beauty and lifestyle bloggers to Anvaya Cove last April 16, 2010. It was a day of great learning, fun, and friendship.

Anvaya Cove with NeutrogenaAnvaya Cove was the ideal backdrop for getting to know more about healthy summer skin and the Skin Safety Campaign of the Philippine Dermatological Society.

Dr. Loverna Suratos of the Philippine Dermatological Society with Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch SunblockDr. Loverne Suratos, MD, FPDS was our resource person for the day. Dr. Suratos is the Public Relations and External Affairs Committee Chairman of the Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS). She shared with us the importance of protecting your skin from sun damage. Here are some key points:
  • You need a sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 15 daily, because exposed skin can get sun damage from activities such as driving or walking outdoors if unprotected.
  • You need to apply sunscreen 30 minutes before exposure to give your skin time to absorb it.
  • Avoid harmful rays from 9am to 4pm. It used to be 10am to 3pm, but this has since been adjusted since our ozone layer isn't what it used to be.
  • Re-apply sunblock every two hours if you're swimming or engaging in an activity that causes you to perspire a lot. Even waterproof sunblock washes off eventually.
  • It takes 1/2 tsp of sunblock to effectively protect your face (including your ears), 1/2 tsp for each arm, and 1 tsp for each leg.
Dr. Suratos also shared the Philippine Dermatological Society's advocacy, the Skin Safety Campaign. Basically, the PDS aims to educate Filipinos about the importance of seeking professional help or skin treatment only from dermatologists accredited by the PDS. I urge you to watch the 30-second video below:

That TVC was so morbid and creepy that all of us in the room reacted instantaneously. Dr. Suratos told us that it's actually based on a true story of a woman who had a full body peeling at a seedy salon. She died from poisoning because the "cosmetologist" applied way too much phenol, a highly potent peeling agent. When they extracted her blood at the hospital, it had the color and consistency of chocolate, we were told.

Remember dear readers, a "facialist", "therapist", "cosmetologist", etc. IS NOT a dermatologist. The only person you should entrust your skin to is a PDS-accredited dermatologist. Treatments from spas which involve non-invasive procedures like massaging and scrubbing are okay, but serious stuff like laser procedures (warts and hair removal), chemical peeling, pricking, and injections among other things should only be done by a PDS-certified dermatologist. It may sound elementary, but a lot of people are actually lured in by affordable treatment packages being offered by salons and beauty centers that do not even have a dermatologist on board.

Neutrogena bloggers at Anvaya CoveHealthy Summer Skin at Anvaya Cove was Neutrogena's first ever out-of-town event. I consider myself fortunate for being given the opportunity to be part of it. It was really more like a girls' day out albeit we all learned a lot during the course of the day.

Animetric at Anvaya Cove with NeutrogenaAs for me, I'm already a regular sunblock user from way back since I'm obsessed with keeping my complexion the way it is in terms of color and texture. I can even say that applying sunscreen is the best anti-aging ritual you can engage in. Studies show that constant sun exposure without protection causes those lines, wrinkles, and dark spots. Prevention is always better than cure so make it a habit to slather on the sunblock!

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunblock and Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Waterlight LotionAlthough Dr. Suratos and other PDS-accredited dermatologists cannot endorse products, she advised us to stick to the known brands so you can be sure of getting proper protection.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Complete UV Waterlight Lotion SPF 50+ PA+++ (P460, pictured above left) and Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunblock SPF 50+ PA+++ (P509.25, pictured above) are available in leading department stores and supermarkets nationwide.
