Once I tried taking home a jar of Kaya which I decided to put in my hand-carry luggage. Just as we were about to board the plane, the Singaporean customs officer told me I have to dispose of it because gels and liquids were not allowed on board and my little jar of Kaya qualified as such!
So when frannywanny invited food bloggers to brunch at Ya Kun Kaya Toast I said yes right away. I had a value set meal made up of one slice of Kaya Toast with Butter (pictured above), one soft-boiled egg (pictured below), and a cup of hot coffee or tea. You get all that for P115. For P150, you get two of everything except the drink. As the name suggests, the Kaya Toast with Butter is comprised of grilled brown bread filled with Kaya and butter. It was pretty good -- not too sweet and quite light.

My soft-boiled egg was served in impeccable condition -- perfectly round and white. I had to break it so the yolk would provide color to the photo above. Ya Kun Kaya Toast owner Richard Co suggests topping your egg with a dash of pepper and a bit of Singaporean dark soy, which I did. Sooo yummy! If I didn't have to worry about cholesterol I could've easily have had two or three of these. The egg is not undercooked, it's fully cooked so you don't have to worry about salmonella.
For my drink I chose Yin Yang (P60 if ordered ala carte, pictured above), which is half coffee and half tea with condensed milk. It was just perfect as is, no need to add anything... just drink it right away. :D
Ya Kun Kaya Toast is actually a Singaporean franchise which opened in Manila back in December 2009. They have just about every kind of toast you can imagine. Watching the staff cook the eggs and prepare the drinks at the counter area is a spectacle in itself.
One of the more unique items on the menu is the Milo Toast (P60 for one slice, pictured above), which is grilled brown bread topped with Milo powder and condensed milk. It was also good but I kind of prefer good old-fashioned Kaya Toast with Butter.
Another kind of toast I really liked was the Cheezy French Toast with Kaya (P75, pictured above). Soft French Toast filled with Kaya and a slice of cheese served with a small bowl of Kaya on the side. Ya Kun Kaya Toast doesn't serve anything else except toast, soft boiled eggs, and drinks so this is a place that's best for breakfast, tea time, or dessert. They're open from 7am to 11pm daily.
